Dear Mr. Dormandi:

I was hoping to be abe to send you a cable with some good news, and I am terribly sorry to have to send you the enclosed letter. I was sure that Lippincott would accept your novel, as I could not imagine their turning it down. However, this does not discourage me in the least. I have given it to a frined of mine, who is one of the editors of Knopf’s, and I hope will accept it. He promised me a quick decision.

Olga called a few days ago, and we expect to see her sometime this week. I know she will be very disappoined with the news. But I will try my best to cheer her up.

Kindest regards,

Maximilian Becker
