Gara László

Lived in France from 1924 to 1952 and from 1956 to his death in 1966.

It was in November 1955 that László Gara mentioned for the first time the name of Jean Rousselot in one of his letters to Gyula Illyés in relation to the book Hommage des poètes français to Attila József. (See the edition of the correspondence between Gara and Illyés established by Borbála Kulin in 2007). It is during the preparation of this book, that Gara made the acquaintance of Guillevic and Rousselot. He very soon proposed to them to adapt Illyés poems, according to his raw translations. Illyés was delighted with the result and informed the two French poets, through Gara, in December 1955.
The first encounter between Jean Rousselot and Gyula Illyés took place in Paris at the beginning of the summer of 1956, during the presentation of the book Poèmes (eds Seghers, 1956), a selection of poems by Illyés, translated into French by Gara and adapted by Pierre Seghers.
Rousselot wrote in his article, La poésie dans le monde d'aujourd'hui, published in the July 1956 issue of L'Age Nouveau, that he regrets that Hungarian poetry is so little known in France, while praising the poetic works of Gyula Illyés and Attila József.
In early October 1956, Rousselot was invited to Hungary for two weeks. In an interview he gave to the newspaper Szabad Nép (Free People), which appeared in issue 11 in October 1956, Rousselot evokes again Attila József, whom Gara made known to him and for which he experienced a real thunderbolt. He also took the opportunity to praise Ladislas Gara and his work as a translator.
It is during this visit that is really born the friendship between Rousselot and Illyés, while it is consolidated its relation with Gara.
